Agriculture in the United States has been enormously productive over the past century, growing the nation’s food output and security to levels unparalleled in the world and increasing the nation’s standard of living. But, an increasingly affluent society also demands more from agriculture along the way. Can agriculture provide commercial food production while also serving demand for local food systems, bioenergy, and the environment? Lubben will discuss these fundamental factors driving U.S. agriculture and the policy issues and developments like the farm bill that are shaping them.
