Event Description:
The CENTRAL COLLEGE A CAPPELLA CHOIR makes its debut performance on the Sondheim stage with a diverse repertoire from many centuries, using a variety of timbres, unaccompanied, piano, Barhydt organ, harp, instruments. The Choir performs at an artistic level worthy of performances at the Washington National Cathedral and the New York City Cathedral of St. John the Divine. The Central College A Cappella Choir is a 60-member ensemble that has gained a reputation for its diverse repertoire as well as for its excellence in choral music since its founding in 1932. Although its ranks of students represent a wide range of majors both musical and nonmusical, all are similarly committed to collectively sharing the power of music. Now in its 85th season, the A Cappella Choir has established numerous yearly choral traditions including the Fall Mini Tour of Iowa, Christmas Candlelight Concerts, performances at various churches and cathedrals throughout Iowa, Rock-A-Pella?a variety show organized every spring?volunteer work preparing Dutch poffertjes during Pella's Tulip Time celebration in May, and major tours annually in the spring. The choir is under the direction of Mark Babcock, M. Joan Farver Endowed Professor in Music and Director of Choral Activities. The choir embarks on annual tours throughout the Midwest and coastal regions and plans international excursions every four years. Prior tours include destinations such as the National Cathedral in Washington D.C., the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine in New York City, as well as countries like Italy, China, Romania, and southern Brazil.
