Event Description:
What is Great River Region Days?
The counties of Des Moines, Henry, Lee, and Louisa work together to create this annual two day lobbying trip to our state capital. Nearly 100 business leaders, community officials and high school students attend.
What happens during these two days?
The trip begins with a Capitol Rotunda luncheon where community leaders serve our legislators and their staff some Southeast Iowa cuisine. Next, we have and afternoon of variety of speakers and topics. M-Power U students present their position statements during this time as well. After the sessions, we host a Legislative Reception at the Embassy Suites. All legislators from across the state attend and the Governor and/or Lieutenant Governor gives the keynote speech. Day 2 begins with a Leadership Breakfast highlighted by a legislative panel and continues into a variety of more information sessions before we release at lunch.
What can you do to prepare for the trip?
You can get acquainted with the issues currently being discussed at the State Capital, attend our local Legislative Forum on January 24th, and read up on current issues. Remember, approaching an elected official is no big deal, they are accountable to you as a registered voter!
