Event Description:
Housing Summit to address critical rural development challenge
MOUNT PLEASANT—The U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Iowa Finance Authority, Iowa Wesleyan College and Mount Pleasant Area Chamber Alliance announce a Rural Housing Summit June 10 in Mount Pleasant.
The perceived shortage of market-rate housing in the rural Midwest and Great Plains has been called a “crisis situation” and is increasingly a barrier to talent recruitment and retention. The Housing Summit will allow participants to discuss options and opportunities, outline common challenges, describe federal and state programs, and bring stakeholders together to share best practices.
Guests will include Bill Menner, US Department of Agriculture—Rural Development Director for Iowa; Steve Eggleston, Director of the Iowa Field Office of the US Department of Housing and Urban Development; Dave Vaske, housing tax credit manager for the Iowa Finance Authority; Mary Bujold, president of private firm Maxfield Research, and others. A panel of Henry County landlords will discuss opportunities and challenges for market-rate rentals, while a local first-time homebuyer will describe the occasional difficulties of finding an affordable late-model house in the rural Midwest.
The housing summit will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Howe Student Activity Center on the campus of Iowa Wesleyan College. RSVP with the Chamber by Tuesday, June 3 if you plan to attend and stay for lunch, provided by the Mount Pleasant Area Development Commission.
