Event Description:
This class will explore the construction and the operation of the “Peavine” Railroad which connected the Iowa towns of Fort Madison and Ottumwa.  Local towns which were located along the route included West Point, Pilot Grove, Hillsboro, Birmingham, Collet, and Libertyville.  Slides used will enrich the story of widening the tracks from narrow gauge to standard gauge, depots that were moved and even new towns that were born along the rails northwest from Fort Madison through Lee County, Van Buren County, Jefferson County and Wapello County.  A handout will be provided.  Attend and find out why it was nicknamed, the “Peavine”.
