Name: "THE WIND" - Silent Movie
Date: September 29, 2015
Time: 7:30 PM - 9:30 PM CDT
Event Description:
Experience the unique combination of recorded film and live organ music accompaniment while watching the 1928 film "THE WIND," starring Lilian Gish silent movie witht the Barhydt Organ featuring JASON ROBERTS. Gish plays an impoverished young woman who travels west to live in Texas with her cousin. Slowly, the constant wind on the prairie drives her to the brink of insanity; but she finds both strength and romance along the way. The silent film era lasted only a decade- the 1920's. During this time, since film makers were not able to coordinate film and sound recordings, organists and pianists cultivated the art of silent film accompaniment. Usually the accompaniments were improvised: they were created as the organist watched the film. Jason Roberts is Associate Music Director at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church in New York City. A graduate of Rice University and the Yale Institute of Sacred Music, his teachers have included Clyde Holloway, Martin Jean and McNeil Robinson. He is winner of the 2008 AGO National Competition in Organ Improvisation and the 2007 Albert Schweitzer Organ Competition. He has recently presented recitals for the national conventions of the Association of Anglican Musicians and the American Guild of Organists. He has been a finalist at competitions in St. Albans, England and Haarlem, The Netherlands; and he enjoys accompanying silent films.
